I had my first lesson when I was in grade 3 and instantly fell in love with the sport. 20+ years later, I continue to expand my knowledge about the horse industry. I started off by riding in the hunter ring and now I am working towards going into eventing.
When I was younger, I worked at a few show barns where I was able to assist in show preparation and care for top show horses. I also have worked at a Thoroughbred breeding stable where I got extensive knowledge in working with young horses and the racing industry.
I got my first pony, Spy, when I was 13 years old and trained him from the ground up with the help of my coach at the time. I eventually took him to shows and entered in the hunter ring where we took home winnings each time. I now own a Thoroughbred that is at Denmar, and we are working towards getting into eventing. Since owning him, I have taken a step back from the show ring to train him but hoping to get back into it in 2022! I have also participated in many clinics, including one coached by Greg Kuti, who is a World Cup and Grand Prix rider. Although I do not have many hours in the show ring myself, I have continued to work at my goals while riding and always have tried to expand my knowledge in any way possible.
I was the equine manager at a wedding venue. I would care for the horses, and drive the carriage for the weddings. I also exercised them on a regular basis. Both horses knew verbal cues that we used in order to turn them in either direction. Getting the horses to self hitch was an experience as well, I would ground drive them to the carriage where they would back up perfectly so I would be able to hitch them. In the winter when there was no weddings, the farm had guest out for sleigh rides which I was able to be a part of and drive the horses through the snow. That was a lot of fun!
With most of my riding career being highly involved in the hunter equitation ring, I focus on rider position and proper use of aids while in the saddle to allow for a safe and proper experience. Having previous coaching experience, I implement proper foundations of riding from the beginning to help a student understand each step prior to advancement. A good foundation of riding is integral to making a good equestrian, so the emphasis is there and slowly adding onto that to make a solid all-around rider.
